Slack

Where the system speaks up when a human has to decide.

What it is

Slack is a messaging tool for teams. For automation, though, a different property is the interesting one: it is the most convenient place for a system to speak to a human without that human having to go and look somewhere.

Where it holds

As the approval gate. A process prepares something, reaches the point where a decision is due, and asks the question where work is happening anyway. One button for yes, one for no, and the process continues or does not. That is the difference between an automation you can leave running and one you switch off because it sent something embarrassing once.

Second place: alerts that carry an instruction. Not “error in workflow 12”, but which process, what was expected, what arrived instead, and what to do now.

Where it bites

Too many messages is the same as none. A channel reporting every successful run is ignored within two weeks, and then the one message that mattered goes unnoticed too. A system should speak up when there is something to do and stay quiet otherwise.

The free plan forgets. Older messages eventually become unreachable. Anyone using Slack as a log has no log. The log belongs in a database; Slack gets the question.

It becomes a second inbox. That is an organisational problem rather than a technical one, and it decides whether the approval question is seen at all.

What it looks like when it runs

A workflow runs on its own up to the one point where somebody has to look, and exactly there a message appears with two buttons: approve or change. Plus the uncomfortable kind of alert nobody else sends: that nothing has arrived for three days although everything looks green. Those two together are the reason you can let an automated process run at all without watching it.

What to think about before choosing it

If your business does not use Slack, do not force it. The same role is filled by email, Telegram, or whatever messenger you already have open. What matters is not the tool but that the question reaches a human before something irreversible happens.
