WordPress
Websites and shops that belong to you, with everything good and bad about that.
What it is
WordPress runs a large share of the web and is at heart a publishing system you can turn into almost anything with extensions: website, shop, booking system, membership area. That very convertibility is both its strength and its weakness.
Where it holds
If a niche exists, there is a plugin for it. A business handing out slots in fifteen-minute steps and producing PDF vouchers for them is not a standard case, and it still gets built in days rather than months. On a closed platform the same case would be either impossible or expensive.
On top of that: it genuinely belongs to you. The database, the files and the content sit on a server you can move. Nobody changes the terms overnight.
Where it bites
The extensions are the risk. Every plugin is third-party code with full access, and every one is a potential security hole and a potential brake. At one client project I found three extension libraries loading their styles and scripts on every page, including pages where none of their elements appeared.
Updating is mandatory and not risk-free. An update can break a site, a skipped update leaves it exposed. Neither resolves itself.
Page builders create ballast. What looks good in the builder in five minutes is often several times the markup it needed. On a phone you notice.
What it looks like when it runs
For a business with appointments, vouchers or a catalogue, much of it is already built: book, pay, generate a PDF, send it. That saves months at the start. The price is maintenance, because every extension that makes it possible wants to be kept current. The honest dividing line: when people are meant to do something on the page, it is strong. When they are only meant to read, there are lighter ways.
What to think about before choosing it
WordPress is right when you publish regularly or need a function that exists only as a plugin. For a site that rarely changes you pay maintenance, updates and load time for flexibility you never call on. And if you build a shop with it, work out whether the sum of the extensions ends up cheaper than a ready-made shop platform.
